Castleford Footbridge On Site
Construction is presently underway on a new landmark pedestrian bridge linking the Castleford waterfront on the south bank of the river Aire to the community of Lock Lane on the north bank, and ultimately to the Millennium community of Allerton Bywater to the north. The 131 meter long footbridge is in close proximity to the site of an important Roman Road that was once in Castleford and which forded across the River Aire. The bridge plays a key part in removing restrictions to the town centre as it would allow access on foot and cycle between the town, its shopping and schools and communities and areas of natural beauty and historic importance to the north.
The project was undertaken as part of the Castleford Project which is being filmed by Talkback Thames for broadcast by Channel 4 and will form part of a landmark series of television programmes with the aim of ‘educating and inspiring the UK public to participate in the process of regeneration’.
Practical completion of the bridge is expected by the end of 2007.
